GEO optimisation for generative search engines
across Aargau

Aargau is a canton with many centres: anyone who wants to be found in Aarau, Baden or Rheinfelden needs to answer regional questions — increasingly in generative systems such as ChatGPT, Google's AI features, Copilot and Perplexity as well. GEO — Generative Engine Optimization, or in plain English, optimisation for generative search engines — combines core company information with genuine regional additions, rather than duplicating the same page with a different place name. This page is a canton page, not a city page. We support you from Basel; digital meetings and in - person appointments by arrangement are available, and we do not claim to have an office in Aargau. Inclusion or a citation can never be guaranteed.

Initial analysis before any measures

The initial analysis clarifies the geography of your offering: which facts apply centrally, which questions arise in Aarau, Baden or Rheinfelden, and where do details conflict between the website, profile and directories? We check technical accessibility for relevant crawlers and show where central content is sufficient and where distinct regional additions are justified.

GEO for multiple regions in Aargau

A business with several catchment areas does not need separate content for every location at all costs — but it does need a well - considered response to regional questions. We clarify which areas you actually serve and which differences matter to people asking questions.

The demo uses Aarau, Baden and Rheinfelden as example options and shows how the same core question changes by region. A service area is not a branch office — this distinction remains clear throughout all the texts.

Core facts and regional additions

Most of your business information applies equally everywhere: services, approach and contact methods. These core facts belong in one place. Regional additions only add what genuinely differs — catchment areas, local characteristics and regional questions.

The demo combines example core facts with a regional addition and shows how the two levels work together without repeating themselves. It does not generate a real page.

Distinguishing between city, canton and service area

A canton page brings together the services offered across Aargau; a city page is only worthwhile if it answers a distinct question. This distinction matters for generative systems: large numbers of similar pages with swapped place names make it harder to match information accurately.

The demo uses an example to compare a city page with a canton page and shows when each format makes sense. The decision is guided by the enquiries you actually receive.

Questions from Aarau, Baden and Rheinfelden

Regional questions differ: an enquiry phrased in Aarau may sound different in Baden or Rheinfelden. We collect these questions and assign each one to the page that answers it best — whether central or regional.

The demo assigns an example regional question to the appropriate source page and shows why not every question needs a new page. It does not call a real AI system.

Interactive GEO example

Avoiding duplicate content and contradictory statements

Anyone maintaining several regional pages must ensure that each is distinct: its own wording, its own examples and its own questions. And all channels must state the same core details — contradictions between the website, profile and directories make automated matching more difficult.

The demo lets you identify contradictory business details in five example locations and correct them locally. It does not change any real profiles or use any real customer data.

Regionale Seiten sinnvoll verbinden

Regional content only works as part of the whole: the canton page links to city - specific content where there is a valid reason for it, that content links back to core services, and all pages lead to the same enquiry channel. This helps systems recognise the hierarchy and visitors find the right information directly.

Internal links help with discoverability — in both traditional and generative search. One point remains important: every linked page needs distinct content; simply changing the place name is not enough.

Your name, services, contact methods and areas served should be consistent across your website, contact page, Google Business Profile, business directories and social media. Consistent regional details are one of the few factors you can control entirely yourself.

Was GEO bedeutet

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — in plain language, optimisation for generative search engines. This page covers the potential visibility of companies, websites and content in generative search systems and AI-assisted answers.

Traditional SEO fundamentals remain important: content must be crawlable, indexable and understandable, and visible content must match structured data. GEO complements these foundations with clear answers, verifiable facts, sources and unambiguous machine identification of your company information.

Lokale Informationen across Aargau

Widmer & Kunz is based in Basel and supports businesses in Aargau digitally; in - person appointments are available by arrangement. For your content, this means regional details must remain truthful — a service area is not a branch office. Generative systems struggle to interpret contradictory location claims, whereas clear core facts with truthful regional additions can be matched more reliably.

Crawlers and technical accessibility

OpenAI distinguishes three types of access: OAI SearchBot serves ChatGPT's search functions — for a website's content to be eligible to appear in ChatGPT search answers, OAI SearchBot must not be blocked. GPTBot concerns the possible use of publicly accessible content to train generative models. ChatGPT User can access a page in response to a specific user action; this is not the same as automatic crawling. OAI SearchBot and GPTBot have separate settings: a website can allow OAI SearchBot and block GPTBot. Allowing OAI SearchBot guarantees neither inclusion nor citation.

The normal SEO fundamentals still apply to Google's AI features: pages must generally be indexable and eligible for a search result with a text snippet. Google does not require a special GEO file or special AI markup, and there is no special GEO schema that guarantees inclusion. Structured data must match visible content, important content should be available as readable text, internal links help discovery, and images and videos can usefully complement text. Data from AI features may appear in Search Console within Web Search. Inclusion, indexing and display are not guaranteed.

For Bing and Copilot, crawling and indexing remain the technical foundation: clear canonicals and redirects help establish unambiguous URLs, sitemaps should contain only canonical URLs, and IndexNow can notify Bing about new, updated or removed URLs. Bing Webmaster Tools can analyse visible citations in supported AI systems — citations are not rankings or guaranteed visitors. Perplexity uses web search and citations; PerplexityBot respects robots.txt directives, and allowing crawling does not guarantee a citation.

llms.txt is not a standard required by all generative search systems, and Google does not require an llms.txt file for its AI features. An llms.txt file must not be sold as a guaranteed GEO advantage; if used, its benefit for the specific project must be assessed. It does not replace robots.txt, sitemaps, canonicals, indexing or helpful content.

Content and sources

Helpful, verifiable content is more important than artificial keyword repetition: clear company information can support machine identification, and understandable, original content can support eligibility for citation. External mentions and sources cannot be artificially guaranteed.

Technical accessibility alone does not guarantee a mention. Generative systems can misinterpret information — results must be checked regularly, and a single query is not a reliable measure of success.

Four generative systems at a glance

ChatGPT Suche
ChatGPT's search functions; sources may be displayed.
Google AI features
AI Overviews and AI Mode; the usual SEO fundamentals apply.
Microsoft Copilot
Answers based on Bing; citations are not rankings.
Perplexity
Web search with citations; the system makes the selection.

The systems shown are examples of generative search. Inclusion or citation cannot be guaranteed. There is no partnership between Widmer & Kunz and the providers named.

What GEO cannot honestly promise

Mentions, source citations and positions in AI answers cannot be guaranteed. Different systems may use different sources, answers may vary depending on the model, time, location and question, and systems are constantly changing. Crawler access does not guarantee use, structured data does not guarantee a mention, and llms.txt does not guarantee an advantage. AI systems can make mistakes and misinterpret information. Regional pages do not automatically create visibility — each needs distinct content. A single query is not a reliable measurement, not every source citation generates a click, and external mentions cannot be artificially forced. GEO does not replace SEO, content needs regular maintenance, platforms offer different levels of control, and personal or confidential data does not belong in public content. Success must be monitored over a longer period and across several questions.

Monitoring and evaluation

We monitor selected questions by area: is a source displayed, is one of your own pages cited, and is there measurable referral traffic from a region? A source citation is not a ranking or a guaranteed visitor — monitoring helps put regional differences into context.

Project process for your GEO work across Aargau

Distinguishing GEO from SEO

SEO optimises for traditional search engines and organic search results. GEO prepares information for potential use, summarisation or citation in generative search systems. GEO often builds on SEO fundamentals, but does not replace SEO: the same technical accessibility helps both areas, while GEO focuses more strongly on clear answers, verifiable facts, sources and automated association. Each area has its own pages, with links between them.

Your questions about GEO across Aargau

Was bedeutet GEO?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization — in plain English, optimisation for generative search engines. It concerns the potential visibility of your content in AI - powered answers, including answers to regional questions.

Is this page for the city of Aarau?

No. It is a canton page for Aargau. Cities such as Aarau, Baden or Rheinfelden only receive their own content if it answers distinct questions.

Do you have an office in Aargau?

No. Widmer & Kunz is based in Basel. We work digitally and arrange in - person appointments as needed.

How is regional information presented?

Core facts exist in one place; regional additions only add what genuinely differs. A service area is not presented as a business location.

Kann ein Google Unternehmensprofil helfen?

It can supplement local details and strengthen the consistency of your business information. However, it does not replace your own website with well - maintained content.

Can several languages be accommodated?

Yes. Each language version needs complete, well - maintained content; we plan the language structure so that systems can correctly identify how the versions relate to one another.

How is referral traffic from ChatGPT identified?

Through the traffic source information in your website analytics, where measurable. Not every source citation generates a click — referral traffic is only one part of monitoring.

Brauche ich eine llms.txt Datei?

llms.txt is not a required standard; Google does not require an llms.txt file for its AI features. It does not guarantee an advantage — we assess its usefulness for each project. Likewise, there is no special GEO schema that guarantees inclusion; structured data must match the visible content.

What is the difference between OAI SearchBot and GPTBot?

OAI SearchBot supports ChatGPT's search functions, while GPTBot serves the possible use of public content for training generative models. The two have separate settings — you can allow OAI SearchBot and block GPTBot, but allowing access does not guarantee inclusion.
